ARTISTIC TRANSFORMATION FOR HUMAN AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

GerminArte aims to provide professional caregivers, students, and family members more effective means to interact with babies and infants via music.

GermInArte is a partnership of Companhia de Música Teatral and the Laboratory of Music and Communication in Infancy of CESEM of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, New University of Lisbon.

It is supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and extends from 2015 to 2018. The GermInArte project fosters a holistic perspective, in order to reach various social realms, whose direct or indirect influence can shape favourable childhood development.

The GermInArte project aims to contribute to positive social and human development, beginning in earliest childhood.

GermInArte combines theoretical research and empirical work. It also promotes events aimed at the general public, as well as for specific audiences.

Within the scope of general public events, noteworthy is the annual International Colloquium as well as several publications on the Project.

Within the context of events for specific audiences, the GermInArte project offers training and practical experience to educators, musicians, and other artists who wish to use music in their interactions with babies and young children, from newborns to age six. The courses can be either Immersive Training or Transitive Training.

Immersive Training occupies a week of intensive practical work (40 hours). This course is empirical in nature, including artistic experimentation, observation, and educational interactions with babies.
The Transitive Training consists of 3 workshops of 3 hours each. It usually takes place on 2 Saturdays for a total of 9 hours.

GARDEN

Jardim Interior is a process of experiential training, that culminates in an artistic experience for families with babies. It is performed in an outdoor space that encourages encountering and interacting with nature.

KALEIDOSCOPE

Caleidoscópio is a process of experiential training based on the Manual para a Construção de Jardins Interiores, a work published by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It includes a diversified set of artistic and educational experiences with babies.

TRANSITIVE TRAINING:

MUSIC FOR
CHILDHOOD

This is a short-term training process incorporating several different aesthetic and educational perspectives. It aims at personal development, as well as at an enrichment of interaction with babies and children. There are two productions per year, one in Spring and another in Autumn.

SIGHT TUNING

Training centered on the observation of videos on art for children, freely available on the website of the Companhia de Música Teatral. Starting from the analysis and discussion of behaviors in different contexts of musical and artistic intervention, we reflect on the role of music and art in the promotion of social welfare and human development. We also promote experiences that facilitate the development of observation skills, empathy and emotional intelligence.

The GermInArte project seeks a training paradigm in which each individual is able to develop his or her own unique communication skills in the context of artistic interaction. Thus, via different paths, each can positively influence education, childhood, and early childhood care.

The phrase Artistic Transformation (Transformação Artística) affirms that art can be used as a tool for social and human development. Quality childhood care is the basis for a society with a better quality of life; because the investments made in infancy have long term benefits.

GERMINARTE MANIFESTO

We seek training models that:

1. promote harmony and affection;
2. appreciate personal development and the value of quality presence;
3. have exquisite quality, even if appearing utopic;
4. are immersive, thus assuring behavioural incorporation;
5. are able to create new contexts, adapting ideals to reality;

7. aim to pollinate with curiosity and motivation the group work of different agents;
8. value play in open outdoor spaces, in contact with nature;
9. facilitate action by heterogeneous/miscellaneous groups;

“Since BebéBabá, the work of the Theatrical Music Company has been celebrating the pleasure of a musical communication between parents and children, promoting an educational philosophy in which families play a fundamental role, by encouraging children's creativity and learning. Its work has been a source of inspiration for my research within the scope of a ‘communicative musicality' and its educational application. Now GermInArte also presents a training ground for young artists, educators, musicians and psychology and education researchers, who want to know more about the musicality which we are all born with and that is the basis for language acquisition and all the skills developed in school."

This immersive training integrates a final presentation (in a solo, duo or in a trio form) in short music-theatrical scenes dedicated to a baby or an infant. The training course includes voice and movement work, musical improvisation and transdisciplinary creation, live observation of models of artistic interaction with babies, and theoretical reflection and enrichment on experiences undergone. Trainees receive personal coaching when creating a performative situation based on material from the publication Manual para a Construção de Jardins Interiores. Prof. Dr Cristina Faria, at Escola Superior de Educação de Coimbra, hosts the experimental phase of Transitive Training - Music for Childhood. A group of 72 trainees from the middle of Portugal is working to modify and improve the GermInArte project in order to take it on the road.
